and it doesn’t come from jim which is infinitely profound- it is sherlock who finally sees their similarities. sherlock offers this on his own initiative because he recognises the potential each of them have (for great or terrible things), he recognises jim’s vulnerabilities and his humanity and in turn his own, recognises their morality is completely the same- only their talents separate them.
the only reason sherlock is on the side of the angels is because his brain is more gifted with unravelling, not planning. it is not because he is a good person or a hero, because heroes don’t exist and he wouldn’t be one of them anyway. he doesn’t care about ordinary people. he smiles when children are kidnapped and he’s cheered up at the thought of murder. please remember that this is not morally or socially acceptable
and sherlock knows that with their individual genius comes a terrible price;
they are both outcasts because no normal person will ever truly understand sherlock, no matter howfriendly they are with him, and no one can give him what he truly needs apart from jim- john does not understand sherlock, mrs hudson does not understand, lestrade does not understand. they are kind and supportive and they help him as best they can in their own ways, but they do notunderstand.
jim and sherlock both need an audience but while sherlock is potentially able to have an army of admirers for his abilities (the detective catches the criminals, saves the would-be victims hooray) jimabsolutely cannotbecause moriarty is the outcast criminal king and he tragically cannot be identified with his own brilliance
but sherlock, his only interest in the world, offers solidarity against the ordinary, boring masses and he offers companionship in three simple words, a promise that jim moriarty is not alone, and there is something very beautiful in that and the unique irreplaceable connection they share
and so i hope in series three sherlock is internally an absolute messand i hope he gives some slight mention/tribute to jim or that will be some major character inconsistency and i shall frown angrily upon it
